Summer

Pros: “The weather!” says Christina Friedrichsen, author of “Intimate Weddings: Planning a Small Wedding that Fits Your Budget and Style” (North Light Books, 2004). “If you’ve got your heart set on an outdoor wedding, there’s no better season.” There are also three great three-day holiday weekends, and guests are more willing to take vacation time in the warm months and/or when kids are out of school, says Wendi Hroncich, founder of Seattle-based Ethereal Events. Other advantages Hroncich points to include a seasonal produce and flowers, and more daylight hours, which is great for photos.

Cons: Summer is the most popular season for nuptials in the U.S., which means prices generally are the highest and there’s a lot more competition for vendors, says Hroncich. In addition, guests may have already made vacation plans - or have another wedding to attend - during your wedding weekend. And that sunshine you were hoping for? It may not seem so spectacular when you’re dripping in sweat.

Autumn

Pros: Fall is full of fabulous décor inspiration, from colorful leaves to pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks, says Friedrichsen. You also can have a sunset ceremony that’s reasonably early, adds Hroncich, and you may still be able to have an outdoor party. Even better? Travel is typically cheaper during this time, so you may find great honeymoon deals.

Cons: Hroncich warns that cold or wet weather can hit out of nowhere, so you’ll definitely need tents or an indoors backup plan. Autumn also is the second most popular time for weddings, so you’ll need to book your vendors well in advance.

Winter

Pros: Hotels and venues will likely do their own decorating for the holidays, supplying you with free décor that feels festive and warm, notes Hroncich. December can be costly, especially around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but prices often drop drastically in November, January, and February. Use some of the money you save to serve an indulgent spread of seasonal treats like spiked eggnog and gingerbread cookies, says Hroncich.

Cons: It’s a busy and expensive time of year for people, so chances are not everyone on your list will be able to make it, says Friedrichsen. Furthermore, severe weather could make traveling treacherous or downright impossible, Hroncich says.

Spring

Pros: Spring usually is the off-season, thus more venues and vendors should be available, perhaps at a discount, says Friedrichsen. You’ll also find a greater selection of blooms, fresh-feeling menus, and bright color palettes, says Hroncich. Add to that the possibility of sunshine without sweltering heat.

Cons: With the exception of Spring Break, kids will be in school, making it more difficult for families to travel, says Hroncich. And, says Friedrichsen, there’s a lot of potential for a cool, rainy day that you didn’t properly plan for.

When to Marry? Is One Season Better Than The Others?

Recently, I was interviewed by my favorite Journalist Anna Sachse for an article she is writing an article about the pros and cons of each season for getting married. This is a really good question for couples to consider. Every season has a significance to each couple, some maybe more than others. Most people think of summer weddings based on what we all see in movies, magazines, and when we are invited to attend the most, but that does NOT mean it is the right time of the year for you! Here is my full list of the Pros and Cons of each season! I had no idea I had so much to say about this! I hope you find it helpful!

Summer

Pros:

Beautiful weather is most likely

Guests have time off or willingly take vacation time,

Kids are out of school,

3 great 3 day holiday weekends

In 4 season locations, outdoor option generally available

Wonderful selection of seasonal produce

Amazing variety of season flowers in bloom

Bright, Vibrant, and fun color pallets appropriate

Fun refreshing beverages appropriate

Any summertime activity or food is an option, crab bake, lobster cook out, BBQ, etc.

May have a beautiful tan still from summer weather

Longer days full of light

Cons:

Most popular time of year for weddings in 4 season places, which means most expensive time of year, and most competition for locations, vendors, etc.. Can limit your options if you don't pre-plan.

Your may be competing with your guests pre-scheduled vacation plans

3 holiday weekends, people may not appreciate you taking

In warm climates - really hot temperatures - out doors not suggested

Bugs can be a problem in certain areas in the summer months

Competition, You may schedule your wedding on someone else you know's wedding date - 2nd cousin, distant friend, etc. Some of your guests may have another wedding the same day and have to chose

May be leaving your location for honeymoon vacation during your best weather months - might miss the sunshine come winter

Outdoor wedding on hot summer day is really uncomfortable for the Bride in a really formal heaving dress, and for all men in Tuxes or Suits

Sweating profusely on your wedding day is NOT something any bride or groom imagines or thinks about!

Air conditioning at the wedding location really important - can be disastrous with out it!

Candle light is null and void until late into the evening

People can have a hard time dancing until it gets dark - can be late into the evening depending on where you live

Fall

Pros:

Beautiful natural color scheme and use of natural elements for decor

Fall theme is really easy and popular

Beginning to be the less popular time of year, vendor and location rates may be dropping

Nice time to go to on a tropical honeymoon as the weather where you live is getting cold - Make your summer tan last

Less weddings scheduled, so your guest are more likely not going to have another wedding on your date

Travel is less expensive - September is the cheapest and least popular month for travel

Indian summer

Bug problems decrease

Candle light

Sunset Ceremonies - at a reasonable time

Great time for a European or other hot spot honeymoon

Cons:

In warm places, popularity may be increasing due to cooler weather than summer months

School starting

Little to no vacation time left for you or your guests

Risk of cold or wet weather

Sun sets earlier - less day light for photos
Football Season- you may have to negotiate your wedding date around your Honey's team's schedule

Winter

Pros:

Amazing decor options and color schemes to work with

Hotels and venues may decorate for the holidays - supplying you with free decor (that most likely goes with the aesthetic of the location)

Holidays bring family together and are a natural time to celebrate

Prices are discounted except in December at Peak holiday party season

Comfort food

Spiced cider, egg nog, gingerbread, etc.

Candle light/ Fireplaces

Really romantic and magical time of year

Wonderful time for tropical or snowy honeymoon -

Cons:

In cold weather places:

Out door photo or ceremony options limited without proper warm clothing options

Sever weather could delay or cancel your guests travel

What a great start to the new year! This is the week for all newly engaged ladies to begin planning their wedding! (If you're not newly engaged No problem! Wedding Show Bells are Ringing!

Hi All,

Happy New Year!

I hope all of your holiday dreams came true! If you are one of the lucky ladies who ended up with a romantic holiday proposal, then the Seattle Wedding Show should be your first stop of the new year! If you have been planning your wedding for a little while now, the wedding show is still for you! (I sort of feel like it is a right of passage when planning your wedding!) There are a ton of vendors at the show, great cake and goodies, so it can be fun to go to.

Here is the info, and tips I have if you are heading to the show:

Seattle Wedding Show

Location: Washington State Convention & Trade Center

800 Convention Place, 4th Floor

Seattle, WA 98101

When: Saturday January 7th, 201210:00am to 5:30pm (ticket sales open at 9:30am)

Sunday January 8th, 201210:30am to 5:00pm (ticket sales open at 10:00am)

TIPS:

1. The Seattle Wedding Show is the largest of its kind in the Pacific NW. There are hundreds of vendors (some the right fit for your wedding and some not)! Do your research before or after the show. DO NOT sign up with the first vendor offering a Wedding Show Special Deal! You will be sorry! You MUST research the quality of the vendor and their reputation before signing a contract! If you find someone you really like on Saturday, go home, look at their website, call their references, check their yelp reviews, etc.; then go back and book them on Sunday. If you don't want to or can't go both days, many vendors extend their wedding show pricing and deals out past the end of the show (especially if you spoke with them directly)! Make an appointment for a consultation after you've had time to find out more information! Quality vendors will not high pressure sell you!

2. Wear comfortable shoes. It is a huge show! It is possible it could take you 2+ hours to get through it.

3. Layer your clothing. Generally it's cold in the morning at the show and then fills and heats up. Saturday is very busy especially in the morning. If you want to avoid the crowds go later in the afternoon on Saturday or on Sunday. Sunday late afternoon is the least busy, but some of the vendors may have run out of their samples and freebies by then. So, Sunday morning is best!

4. Create a separate wedding email address. (This only applies if you're looking for vendors solo, with out a wedding planner.) You could end up receiving emails from many different vendors, so to keep your real email clean create a wedding only email.Create wedding information labels. This will prevent you from having to write your contact information over and over to enter contests, connect with a vendor, etc.. You will want to include your name, phone number, email, and maybe your mailing address. I have found that large mailing labels work best for this. 1 sheet is probably enough, but is up to you. (Again this only applies if you are looking for vendors with out a wedding planner.)

5. Don't be afraid to go into a booth or speak with a vendor. In my years as a vendor at the show I have seen so many timid brides! The vendors are there to meet you and chat with you about your wedding, and how they may play a role! I know that it can get overwhelming, but know the vendors are there to meet you and answer your questions.

6. Lastly, don't be afraid to say "No". It's okay not to give your information or take a flyer from a vendor that you are not interested in. It's your information, you don't have to give it out.

Happy Holidays! I hope all your Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. dreams have come true! For those of you who's dream of getting engaged over the holidays came true I'm here to help! Here are first of many tips to come!

10 Tips for Wedding Dress Shopping Success!

1. Always make an appointment at the dress shop beforehand!

2. Shop for your wedding gown SEPARATE from Bride's maid dresses. Shopping for both at the same time can be too overwhelming and does NOT give either shopping experience the value it deserves!

3. Wear or bring a strapless bar

4. Wear or bring heals with a comparable heel height to what you will wear on wedding day.

5. Shower and do your hair/makeup - when you try on dresses you will feel better in them if you like your hair and makeup that day!

6. Bring more than 1 person with you, especially if this person will like or hate everything you try on. Bringing someone whom you love their style/taste or has similar taste to you will really help. A 2nd set of great eyes will give you more confidence in your decision! If you have to - bring the people you love, whom you don't share taste, as your last option. They can make your decision harder or with out meaning to make you 2nd guess your self or not enjoy the experience at all. Surrounding yourself with positive people with great fashion sense will help you the most!

7. Try on dresses outside of your comfort zone. You never know what you will end up loving once it is on you. Have fun with this experience! After the wedding is over, you will wish you could go dress shopping again!

8. With that said, keep your wedding vision in mind - you don't want to end up with a dress that doesn't match your venue or formality of your wedding. For you I know you have a pretty clear idea of what you want and it really fits your whole vision, but don't rule anything out before at least trying it on!

9. Ask for a fabric swatch of the dresses you love and take pictures, if the shop will let you!

10. Bring a snack for in between appointments. Have everyone coming with you do the same! Dress shopping takes a lot of energy and time. It's important for all to become starving in the middle of the day!

Dear Wendi Wednesday: Tuxedo Prep

I received this question from one of my clients, and it sparked the perfect topic for this post! I love when my Grooms aren't afraid to ask questions and seek my advice! I have rented a tux but I was wondering if you had any other advice regarding the tux (picking it up, trying it on, etc). I have worn tuxes before but it has been awhile and it wasn't for such an important event.

Hi E.W.,

Thanks for the email! Yes, I do have a little advice. I would definitely see if you can pick your tux up a few days before the wedding to try it on and make sure they gave you the right sizes and pieces (2 days before is perfect!). This gives you ample time to make sure it is all there and in pristine condition (clean, pressed, and no loose hems or holes)! I have sadly seen too many grooms and grooms men having to do the tuxedo shuffle (trading parts and pieces with one another) because the tux shop somehow got the wrong sizes for a couple of the men.

Also, if you are wearing cuff-links or tuxedo buttons you want to make sure you have those days before as well. The rental tuxedos don't usually include those items. When you try the tux on, try on the whole ensemble including socks, cuff-links, buttons, handkerchief, etc. to make sure you like they way it all looks together. A walk through is very important to guaranteeing you like the finished product! If there is something missing or off you can correct it before wedding day!

On wedding day, all eyes may be on her, but her eyes will only be on you!

Now that your RSVP's are in, your feast has been selected, and your timeline of the days events is done; there are still many more decisions that need to be made to create the perfect wedding reception!

One of which is: Where will my guest sit? There are so many options when answering this question! Do I assign tables and exact seats? Do I just assign tables? Do I reserve a few tables for family and friends and let everyone else pick for themselves? Or do I let it be a free for all in which everyone chooses where they want to sit? Professionally speaking, taking that extra step of assigning your guest's tables is wonderful idea! It adds a level of elegance to your wedding, as well as lets your guests know that you thought about their comfort at your reception.

I know, this can get a bit tricky, but I'm here to help! You want everyone to have a wonderful time and be social, but sometimes the numbers of seats at the table don't match perfectly with the people you're trying to fit! Believe me, I have worked through MANY table arrangements in my years of planning, and I've learned some shortcuts I'd like to share! Here are a few tricks I use when assembling table assignments at my events!

Ask your venue for a floor plan with the correct number of tables you will be using; as well as how many people comfortably fit at each table. Table sizes and shapes vary in how many fit so it's important not to over/under fill the tables!

2. Use sticky notes with each guest's name written/printed on it. I generally cut my notes into several strips so that I can get many names out of one normal size post it as possible. (Note, it's important to cut them vertically so that each strip has some sticky on it!) I also like to use the multi-colored marking tape for this project as well. (Writing the names on the tape can be tricky since they are slippery, but are worth it since they are soooo easy to use! Use a fine tip or regular Sharpie for this!)

3. I often color coordinate the post its/tape markers to match the relation of the guest to my couples: ie. Groom's family, Bride's family, Bridal Party, mutual friends, work friends, etc. This really helps me visualize who all belongs together without having to know the specific person each time.

4. Start Arranging!

5. Once everyone is in place, track the table numbers into your spread sheet or document you've been using to track RSVPs that correspond with the guest. This will make it really easy to give the final numbers and table arrangements to your location and caterer.Good Luck! Try to have fun and don't stress! Everyone will have an AMAZING time because they are coming to celebrate you on your big day!

It's Crunch Time!

It is getting to the time of year when your wedding day is just around the corner! You have hired all your vendors, completed all your projects, bought your favors, had your dress fitted, etc., and now you need to know how to make your wedding day run smoothly.

Many of us have been a guest at wedding where there was a lot of standing around wondering, where are the bride and groom?, or when is the next thing going to happen? I'm sure you want to avoid this for your special day. Good News! It is so easy to make sure that you, your new hubby/wife, and your guests have a great time on wedding day! All it takes is putting together a simple timeline for your vendors to follow and guide you through! You have probably considered the placement of the major events of the day: whether you want to be introduced into your reception or sneak in during cocktail hour. When the first dance will take place if your dancing at all. If you want to do a garter and bouquet toss or avoid the whole thing altogether! The list can go on and on!

Luckily, now days there is no "right or wrong way" to way to put your day together. There are just many things to consider, from ceremony start time to last call, inorder to have a smooth flow to your day.

Many of your vendors have probably tried to help you put together a time line already. (Their tools can be really helpful so please use them!) But, I recommend putting together a detailed timeline for the way YOU see your day going. You should share it with ALL your vendors, and not rely on each individual vendor's. They may all be slightly different from one another! Using the ONE you created ensures that everyone has the same overall picture of the day’s events as you want it! It also helps you make sure that you are fitting in all the major events in the time allotted in your contracts. If you only have 7 hours with your photographer, you don't want the ceremony to start at 2:30 and the toast to happen at 10:00pm. You want your photographer there to capture all of the elements you have planned in the 7 hours!

For an easy way to arrange this, I recommend using sticky notes and a large piece of paper with the start of your day on one side and end on the other! It can make for a fun game, mixing and matching the order of events on the time line to find what makes the most sense and works best! It is also a easy way to visually move the key events around to find the suitable order for the two of you! With the events in order you can start filling in the time surrounding the events and creating the time line.

No matter how you schedule your day, make sure that it's all about you two having the best time EVER, and taking special moments to slip away and enjoy being married!

I'm sure all of you, like myself, tuned in to the Royal Wedding of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge this morning! Hopefully you all feel as complete as I do! It was everything I wanted and more! There was not 1 single element that disappointed me in this modern day fairytale wedding! It was fresh, regal, sophisticated, serene, and most of all ethereal! Prince William & Harry looked so dapper and handsome in their Military Uniforms! Every ounce of William looked like the Future King he is! The Royal Family did not disappoint in any way!

There are still so many secrets and surprises in store for the billions of people who will be watching the Royal Wedding 4.29.11! With less than 48 hours to go, I like so many of you, can NOT wait! I am bursting with excitement for this DREAM wedding! It is the event of the century! Oh, I don't want to wait any longer! But since we all have to, here are my wedding dress predictions!

I may be really off, but on the long shot that I am right, I want it to be published for all to see!

HERE ARE MY WEDDING DRESS SPECULATIONS:

Almost everyone in the world is on the edge on their seats waiting to see what Catherine will be wearing on the big day! I have been having dreams about what Kate's wedding dress will look like! Crazy I know! I guess it is an occupational hazard that I happily accept! Not only is the designer important, but so is the dress' fabric, color, style, veil, etc. It is the #ONE piece in the #1 event that will influence wedding trends for the next 20+ years! Kate is already a style icon, making wonderful fashion choices, and this dress will be the most elite of them all! If you combine the photos below you will have my thoughts on what Kate will be wearing on FRIDAY 4.29.11!!

I think Catherine will be in a slim fitting lace gown similar to any of the Elie Saab dresses above! She has such an amazing slim and tall frame that this style gown will look incredible on her! The lace gives the gown such an elegance and femininity I think Kate will be drawn to. Mila Kunis dress from the 2011 Oscar's has an stunning shape, but may be too revealing for the Cathedral setting. A soft cap sleeve and more conservative neckline like the dress below will be more Kate's style!

I don't think that Kate (Catherine) will be wearing a skirt to this volume, but I do think that the regal fabric and lace cap sleeves are very likely to be seen on Catherine on Wedding day!

If you're anything like me you've been interested if not obsessed with the upcoming Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton! I have been enthralled with it since the engagement announcement in November! I absolutely love this couple!

Yes, like many girls of my generation I wished and dreamed of becoming Prince Williams Princess one day, but since I found the love of my life around the same time William found Kate, I no longer longed for the role or responsibility of Princess! Kate is beautiful, elegant, British, and far more suitable than I! I'm thrilled it is her that gets this coveted honor! Look how amazing and in love they look together! I just LOVE them!

I don't know if I have EVER seen a couple more in love and radiant in their engagement photos!

The redesigned rehearsal Anna Sachse CTW Features Historically, rehearsal dinners have been an intimate restaurant affair for immediate family, wedding party members and their significant others, and the parents of any child attendants. However, in recent years, there has been a shift toward opening up these traditional celebrations to more guests, as well as branching out from the standard sit-down meal. Here, two wedding planning experts weigh in on the why and how of a more inclusive and creative pre-big day party. The Perks Weddings generally bring together many people from many different backgrounds, notes Brooke Sheldon, owner of Lilybrooke Events in Kennebunkport, Maine. “Having everyone get together at the rehearsal dinner serves as an ice-breaker – by the time the reception rolls around, everyone is already old friends.” It’s also a great way to ensure you – the bride! – actually get to spend quality time with all your nearest and dearest. “The wedding day goes by so fast, and the couple may feel pulled in many different directions,” says Wendi Hroncich, founder of Seattle-based Ethereal Events. Hosting a more inclusive rehearsal dinner decreases the big day pressure on the bride and groom, and allows for more relaxed hanging out. The Guest List If you have the inclination and the budget, go ahead and include everyone in your rehearsal festivities. But if you must draw the line somewhere, just make sure your invite list is consistent. For example, due to the time and expense involved in traveling, destination-wedding rehearsal dinners have typically involved all the guests, says Sheldon. Playing off that trend, many stateside wedding couples are now opting to include all out-of-town guests in the day-before bash. Others might prefer to host all their extended family members. The Party If the guest list is small or money is little or no object, the rehearsal dinner is a lovely way to add a playful or unconventional element to your gala. Hroncich has had couples treat guests to the famed interactive dinner show Teatro ZinZanni, or spring for dinner cruises that show off the city skyline. Sheldon coordinated a fireworks-filled July Fourth lobster bake on a river. The couple had a private, tented section of lawn for several hundred guests, but selected a space next to a public pops concert for free entertainment. Other creative options include a catered affair at a cool space like an aquarium or racetrack, or picking a unique theme like Old Hollywood or a luau. That said, by no means is it necessary to spend a fortune to have a fabulous fête. Your real focus should be having a rehearsal dinner that feels like it represents who you are as a couple, and fits in with the rest of your wedding weekend events, says Hroncich. A backyard BBQs, a picnic in the park, a pizza party on the patio or a taco truck and s’mores on the beach are all great bets. “If you have a fun location, then be casual with the meal,” says Sheldon. “The enjoyment is really about the atmosphere you create.”

1. Wendi Hroncich, founder of Seattle-based Ethereal Events, recommends wearing a treasured memento from your loved one, such as your mother’s pearls or your grandmother’s brooch.

2. Consider wrapping your bouquet with lace from your mother’s wedding dress, your grandmother’s rosary or a locket containing your loved one’s photo, suggests Brooke Sheldon, owner of Lilybrooke Events in Kennebunkport, Maine.

3. Because smell is linked with memory, tuck your loved one’s favorite scented bloom into your bouquet, advises Emily Ayer, art director for Southern Weddings Magazine.

4. Remember an important loved one by leaving a single stem of his or her favorite flower on the chair where he or she would have sat during the ceremony, says Ayer.

5. Commemorate all lost loved ones with a special note in the wedding program or a brief announcement by the officiant, says Hroncich.

6. Ayer suggests including your loved one’s favorite hymn or reading in the ceremony.

7. “Ask your caterer to include a special family recipe in the reception dinner,” says Sheldon. Add a brief note to the menu that explains the background For example: “Pumpkin Spice Soup, made from a family recipe, in loving memory of Grandma Gladys.”

8. Honor a loved one with the music, says Hroncich. For example, if your father has passed away, you might play his favorite song during the cake cutting or anniversary dance.

9. Sheldon suggests setting aside a special table with framed photos of all the important couples in your lives. Make it a multi-generational tableau (best friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, etc.) that includes both those who have passed and those who will be present as you celebrate your future.

Discount chain Costco is now offering brides a chance at designer dresses.

The store is setting up bridal boutiques right in the middle of its stores. The wedding bliss is temporary but the company is hoping to move the operation on-line by June. The same month Costco will bring the road show to the Northwest.

Six styles from designer Kirstie Kelly are available at one time ranging from $700-1,400. You buy the dress and walk right out of the store with it. Designed for brides on a budget, Costco says it's had amazing feedback.

Wedding planner Wendi Hroncich tells us "the trend is to downsize." A bride-to-be we spoke with says she learned quickly just how expensive weddings are. Chelsea Wilnott says, "I think as soon as you say wedding, price tags start going up."

Hroncich says she understands the concept in theory. "It's your wedding dress, the most important dress you'll ever wear. If you go to a discount store or a Costco for it, it's bad lighting, people with their shopping carts going by you, it's just not the same experience."

Costco customers joked at first but Mary Haltiner told us she thinks the whole thing might just work. "I doubt they'd put it next to the hamburgers but they sell coffins on-line so why not wedding dresses?"

You got engaged over the holidays! Yippee! Congratulations! Finally you get to start planning your dream day! This is such a fun and exciting time in your life! I'm here to help you avoid making the "I've never done this before" wedding planning errors!

The first mistake that most Bride's make is going straight to buying their wedding dress before thinking about any of the wedding details. Some of the things that will play a role in deciding the PERFECT dress for your are: location, style, season, formality of wedding, etc. I KNOW wedding dress shopping is something you've been dreaming about for a long time! It is magical! But please listen to me when I say find your venue and set your date first!!! If you find a dress that is perfect for an outdoor summer wedding, but the venue you choose is only available in fall or winter then you have a problem! Creating a cohesive wedding design takes all the parts and pieces into account. The dress being a huge factor in the total design!

The second mistake couples make is not having a clear idea of what the other wants. It is so important that you talk to one another about your wedding wish list and if you want to include your families! If your groom wants you to take the planning and run with it, that's great! But it is sooo important that you both know where you stand and how the planning is going to be executed! Having open communication and a plan is the key to being able to enjoy this wonderful time!

There are many more mistakes that can be made, but if you follow my suggestions, hopefully you won't fall into any of them!

Here are my first 3 steps in planning your wedding!

Set a realistic budget with all parties contributing and make a priority list. The priority list is a huge factor in how much of the budget you are willing to spend each service/item. I know there are many online budget helpers that tell you how much of the total budget should be spent on what...BUT they don't know you or what you want for YOUR wedding! They are trying to please EVERYONE! Take them with a grain of salt if you do use one. Set the budget percentages based on your needs and desires, not what they tell you! If having a huge, fun party is your top priority then the music (DJ or Band) and bar (wine & beer or premium liquor) will be at the top of your list! If you want a tranquil stress free day where you can enjoy every-one's company and not worry about a thing then having a wedding planner should be at the top of the list. Your priority list should dictate how you divide up and spend your budget. Spend more on the things that matter most and save on or do the DIY for the things that are near the bottom!

Find your venue and set the date! The venue and date of your wedding are the foundation that you build on. You can't hire any of your vendors until you have a date set in stone! And usually the venue you chose availability will help you narrow down and select your wedding date. If you already have a date before selecting a venue the selection of vendors can take place, but venue/location should be the first thing you find!

You have a budget, priority list, date and venue...NOW go find your dress and all other vendors! All the must needed basics are in place and now is the fun part begins! Build your wedding around your vision and make sure that your dress makes you feel more beautiful then you've ever felt! Here are just a few other vendors that should be selected right away:

Catering
Florist
Bride's maids dresses
The list goes on and on!

5 ways to politely deny “help” from overzealous family and friends

Everyone knows that planning a party for everyone you know is a lot of work, so chances are your loved ones will offer to pitch in. Sometimes you might appreciate their offers – maybe your best friend is a whiz with flowers and offered to create your centerpieces free of charge – but sometimes you may find that their benevolence is more harmful than helpful.

Need some graceful ways to “just say no” to unwanted assistance? Here are five expert tips that should help keep your dream wedding and your loved ones’ feelings intact.

Be Switzerland

The key to politely deflecting unwanted help is to reduce the personal aspect, says Elise Mac Adam, author of “Something New: Wedding Etiquette for Rule Breakers, Traditionalists, and Everyone In Between” (Simon Spotlight Entertainment, 2008). For example, if you are dealing with a pushy relative or future in-law, one way out is to say: “I love you so much, and I love that you have offered to help, but I have to be very careful not to alienate anyone on the other side by leaving people out. For that reason we’ve decided that we won’t involve family in the big jobs.”

This is the “it’s just politics” solution, says Mac Adam. “It also makes you look considerate while allowing you to get what you want or, rather, not get what you don’t want.”

Be Magnanimous

Perhaps your only-cooks-with-a-microwave cousin has offered to bake your cake. The solution? Tell her that you are touched by her generosity, but that you just don’t feel comfortable putting the people who are most important to you to work, says Mac Adam. Instead, you’d prefer that she enjoyed the food, took part in pictures and cut loose on the dance floor.

Play the Blame (it on the pros) Game

“I often tell my clients to blame me!” says Wendi Hroncich, a wedding planner and founder of Seattle-based Ethereal Events. “Most people don’t have a good argument against ‘I really appreciate the offer but my wedding planner thinks it’s best if ...’ And the same goes for any other wedding professionals you work with, including the caterer, DJ, photographer, etc.”

In addition, it’s unlikely that your meddling mother-in-law will maintain a lifelong relationship with any of your vendors, so it’s far better for her to be temporarily upset with them than with you.

Redirect

You may not want your scatterbrained cousin to be in charge of passing out the checks to vendors like she offered, but chances are you can find another role for her. For instance, Mac Adam suggests saying something like: “It’s so nice of you to offer, but it would actually mean a lot to me if, instead, you could check up on Aunt Tessie throughout the night so that she doesn’t get lonely.”

You can also dole out “real” jobs, which, even if done incorrectly, won’t have a major impact on your event or your happiness, says Hroncich. Safer bets include guest-book attendant, gift attendant, usher and candle lighter.

Minimize Damages

If you want a loved one to feel included but you simply can’t stomach the idea of having him or her take part in the logistics of your actual big day, Hroncich suggests assigning a task that you need taken care of in the days or weeks prior, such as picking up a friend from the airport, dropping off hotel gift bags or collecting the programs from the printer. Just be sure that you have a back-up plan in case the person flakes.

I was recently interviewed for an article coming out soon about How to Say No to Help. The idea is to help couples find easy and polite ways to say "No Thanks!" to unwanted help from friends and family, while minimizing hurt feelings and still getting what they want. Here is a sneak peek before anyone else of what I had to say!

So, the thing with saying no to input and help from friends and family on your wedding is the same as saying no in all other aspects of your life! Being kind, appreciative and blaming it on someone else all work well, and when the 3 combine: an instant resolution! As you may be beginning to find out, everyone wants to help and knows best when it comes to your wedding! It can get annoying, I know, but listening and appreciating their offer is one of the most important parts to not hurting feelings and getting what you want! But the key to letting them down easy is, blaming it on some else. It always gets you off the hook! I'm NOT saying blame your Mom, Hubby to be, Maid of Honor anyone like that! With an event as big as your wedding there are plenty of other people to have as a scapegoat! The wedding planner (yours truly), Professional DJ or Band, Professional Photographer, Professional Caterer, Venue, etc!

I almost always tell my clients blame me! I'm completely okay being the target of someone’s frustration when it protects my Brides and Grooms. I will not have a relationship with this family member for the rest of my life, my birde or groom will! So if the person(s) are upset with me for a little while rather than my client it's a far better thing! Most family and friends don't have a good argument against "I really appreciate the offer, but my wedding planner thinks it's best if ...." fill in the blank.

The same goes for all your vendors! I must stress the importance of professional vendors! They have the years of experience and credibility needed to put the wanting party at rest. You have hired them to have your wants and best interest above all else! They are also prepared to handle potentially wild family/friend request on wedding day with class and professionalism! Just because the Bride or Groom said no to the helpful party, doesn't mean they won't ask the vendor to do so on wedding day!

Here are a few tips to make sure your wedding goes exactly as you want with or without the help of your family and friends!

1) Be thoughtful and appreciative of the request/offers you receive. Don't think that if you accept help with from one you need to accept it from all. Just let the person whose help you don't need know you have it handled but you really appreciate the offer!

2) If you aren't able to say no thanks, then give people who want to help small jobs that if not done correctly don't really impact the day! Have someone be: the guest book attendant, gift attendant, usher for the ceremony, responsible for getting all the family their personal flowers (corsages/boutonnieres), candle lighter at ceremony or reception, etc. Then allow the major parts of the day be handled by your hired professional vendors!

3) There are also plenty of jobs leading up to wedding day! Someone needs to drive Grandma and Grandpa to the rehearsal dinner, pick up so and so from the airport, print directions to the ceremony, etc. Delegation and follow up are key to the success of this one!

4) Make sure your vendors know exactly how you want things. If there are worries or concerns minor or major tell your vendor! It is better to prepare them for everything that you think might be asked of them.

5) Make sure you know how your vendor handles request! Whether it be a song request from your Do Not play list or guest switching tables. It is soooo important that the vendor doesn't put it back on you! The words "Go ask the Bride and Groom!" are a nightmare on wedding day! Talk to the vendors ahead of time to avoid this!

Bottom line, you are very lucky to have so many people wanting and willing to help you! I hope this is beneficial in making the best use of it! I’d love to hear how you handled all the help on and surrounding your wedding day!

Yesterday I featured an MSN article about "What Kind of Bride Are You?" Today I thought I would show some love for the Groom's out there. So this week's Dear Wendi Wednesday, I'm asking you all to figure out "What Kind of Groom Are You?/ Is He?" Good Luck and Enjoy!

No matter how well you think you know your fiancé, don't be surprised if his behavior during the wedding planning process still throws you for a bit of a loop.

As the big day approaches, some grooms begin behaving badly, often with comical (albeit frustrating) results. Here are simple strategies for dealing with five types of grooms-to-be. Which one are you marrying?

The Groomzilla
He's the one displaying the wedding inspiration board prominently above his desk.

How to spot him: Your wedding planner is in his Top 5. He recently said that he wasn't really "feeling peonies" and that he has a few dress ideas that he'd like to run by you. He just wants every detail to be absolutely perfect. So far, so good ... right? Wrong! The only thing perfectionism will get anyone (including you) is a first-class ticket to the dark side. And add to that the not-so-small fact that you've probably got an idea or two of your own.

How to deal: Stop pushing back. Relax; no one is suggesting that you need to take his balloon centerpiece idea seriously. Instead of getting wrapped up in his suggestions, take a step back and focus on the core issue: his sudden control freakiness. It's probably his way of dealing with inner panic, and he may feel overwhelmed and is overcompensating. So what do you do? Make him feel like an equal player — which, by the way, he is. Carve out a few things for him to oversee all on his own.

The Social Secretary
His address book looks like an encyclopedia, and he can't even walk to the mailbox without running into an old friend.

How to spot him: This week alone, he invited your neighborhood dog-walker, the checkout girl at the grocery store and "a cool guy from the gym." In fact, he's on his cell phone right now and you swear you just heard him say, "The more, the merrier." He means well, but with every "friend" he invites, you see your budget evaporating.

How to deal: His exuberance is adorable. But there are ways to express it without inviting the entire world. Here's what to do: Try the shock method. Sit him down and show him the cold, hard numbers. There's nothing more sobering than a quick tally of just how much all these extra people can drive up the bottom line (your expenses can soar well into the hundreds per guest). Then remind him of the type of atmosphere you two originally discussed. The words "intimate" and "300 guests" aren't exactly simpatico. But you can compromise. If your budget allows, create space for two or three "straggler friends" who may materialize at the eleventh hour.

The Mama's Boy
He looks like a guy who's stuck between a rock and a hard place (newsflash: you're the rock).

How to spot him: Even though you know that his taste is very similar to yours, he attempts to defend every one of your future mother-in-law's bad suggestions. Here's the most recent example: "A teddy bear theme could be cool."

How to deal: This can be a tricky one. Since your relationship with your future mother-in-law will continue long after the wedding day has passed, keep this from escalating into a huge tug of war. You need to work out the details behind the scenes and let him be the one to stand up to his mom. And keep in mind that she probably just wants to help. There are plenty of wedding tasks to go around; you can include her by asking her to do something that will play to her strengths (oh, come on — everyone's good at something!). Do you two have completely different decorating styles? Maybe she has beautiful penmanship and could address all of the invitations or create place cards or tags for favors.

The Big Talker
He's got it all covered. Yeah, right.

How to spot him: To hear him talk, it's like he's been planning weddings since the fourth grade. Researching venues? No problem — he's on it. Hiring a band? It's taken care of. But as months trickle by, it's clear that he's all talk.

How to deal: First, resist nagging — it rarely works and will just leave both of you feeling resentful. Instead, schedule a weekly check-in to give each other status reports on your progress. By corralling all wedding-task talk to one time, you'll be less tempted to bring it up over and over and risk becoming...you guessed it, a nag.

The Ghost
It's a good thing you took those engagement pictures. Otherwise, you may have a hard time remembering what he looks like.

How to spot him: Is this a trick? Sightings have been so rare that the wedding planner decided to nickname him Snuffleupagus. In fact, he's recently been making himself so scarce that you're really starting to worry he's getting cold feet.

How to deal: First, understand that his lack of involvement probably isn't an indication of a lack of love for you, or even a lack of interest in getting hitched. Second, there's a chance that he's trying to do you a favor. (Yes, really). Maybe he's heard horror stories from grooms who erred too much in the other direction. Or maybe he's seen couples bickering over wedding plans and would prefer not to go down that path. Or maybe (just maybe) he's totally clueless. The only way to know for sure is to talk about it.

Try to get him involved by asking him which details really matter to him (and let go of the fantasy that he should care about them all). And listen! If he cares about cake, crown him Cake Czar and let him set up tastings all over town. If he's into music, have him price bands, interview DJs or go nuts on iTunes. Remember: You get to do the fun stuff (go shopping for your dream dress ... hello!), so give him tasks that will make his experience equally great.

Even the calmest woman can suffer a meltdown (or six) in the course of planning a wedding. Do you still recognize yourself, or have you turned into one of these bridal caricatures?

Every bride has her own, well, let's just say quirks. Read on and see if you recognize anyone you know.

The Non-Decider
Shoe fit? The deadline for mailing invites is looming. Too bad you've yet to choose a location. The dress? You've narrowed it down to white. Or, wait, ivory. Ivory or white it is.

Break through it: Not a case of cold feet? Phew, okay, then the culprit could be perfectionism. It's a simple equation: perfectionism = procrastination = paralysis. Afraid to make the wrong decision, you've opted not to make any at all. If your budget can bear it, call a wedding planner ASAP. Not possible? Call a summit of your closest friends and ask for help. Divide and conquer the scary to-do list together. Relax, it'll be fun. And a fun wedding is a perfect wedding!

The Alpha
Shoe fit? Bridal binder? Check. Countdown calendar? Check. Hostages? Check (though you prefer to call them the wedding party). The upside to you bordering on bridezilla is that you know what you want. The downside — you knew there would be one, right? — you've been voted most likely to go 'zilla at the first fumble. And while bossy might get you results at the office, with friends and family it's not cute.

Break through it: If you're a proper type A, you've hired the best people, so have a little faith! Give vendors a list of instructions, in writing, and then lay off. When it comes to friends and family, any help they offer is a labor of love, so help them love it by dropping the drill sergeant act.

The Fairy Princess
Shoe fit? You went shopping for a sheath, but bought a dress so poufy it'll dust both sides of the aisle. Instead of reserving a limo, you put a Cinderella coach — complete with six white horses — on hold. You've always been a minimalist, so what's up with Barbie's dream wedding?

Break through it: Sounds like your inner 8-year-old has taken over the planning process. Hey, it happens! But your wedding should reflect who you (and your man) are now. Not something you once scribbled in a diary. Run everything by your BFF, the one who always tells you when you've lost your mind. If it's all wrong, she'll see it. And if it turns out that a castle-shaped champagne fountain is you, she'll help you get it.

Miss Baby
Shoe fit? When you hear that the flowers you wanted are out of season, you cry, stomp, and say (unfortunately out loud), "Why me?" When your honey says the groomsmen vetoed the color coral, you can barely get out of your pajamas for three days because, really, what's the point if there will be no coral on your wedding day? In short, stress has gotten the best of you. But rather than raging when you don't get your way, you throw lavish pity parties left and right.

Break through it: You're obviously overwhelmed and/or exhausted. Time to declare a serious WTO (wedding time-out). Turn off the laptop, hide the BlackBerry, and spend the evening paying attention

The Balanced Bride
Shoe fit? Not a single family member is avoiding your calls. Your bridesmaids don't roll their eyes every time you talk. Even your fiance appears to be having a relatively good time. Congrats on not driving everyone around you crazy!

Break through it: What's to fix? Sounds like you're sitting pretty. But don't be shocked if you have a few mini meltdowns. No one expects you to be perfect.

It is a fabulous short film put together by Leaning Wolf Productions from the incredible 2009 Get Hitched Give Hope charity event I was involved in! I'm sure the many regulars of my blog know all about it since it's all I talked about for several months last year! It was a huge success, where we raised over $37,000 to grant wishes for terminally ill breast cancer patients! I am so proud and honored to have been the Vice President of Procurement in 2009! Mishap Monday - Stand in Coordinator

Thank you so much for your question! I love Groom's cakes! They have been thought of in the past as an unnecessary additional cost, but currently they are becoming incredibly popular. They are a wonderful addition of the Groom's personality into the wedding reception. According to Wikipedia:

"A groom's cake is a wedding tradition typically associated with the American
South... The decoration of the cake may reflect the favorite hobby or
interest of a groom, or be used for humorous effect... The groom's cake
is often served at a separate table from the wedding cake at a wedding
reception, though it may be served as a dessert for a rehearsal dinner."

The important part of a Groom's cake is that you have fun with it and make it about him. Have it made of his favorite flavors, and shaped to represent something he loves. Below are some great examples of my past clients' wedding cakes and groom's cakes!

So Ellen DeGeneres is probably one of my favorite people on television. She is hilarious, while being classy and respectful. She always exudes positive energy! For me, it is nearly impossible to not have my mood lifted when watching her show. (Which sadly I don't get to do very often:()

As a wedding planner I also love weddings on all levels. I have been coordinating weddings going on 5 seasons, and I still tear up at the ceremonies and toasts. I appreciate all of the details from ceremony and reception location to the hand tied handkerchief on the bride's bouquet. It is such an incredible day full of wonderful emotions and joy. I can't express how much I love weddings! And when ELLEN and WEDDINGS unite, it makes for an incredible day for me! Here is one of the most beautiful wedding videos I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot! You can feel the tranquility and joy in them both. This video captures how a wedding should be: joyful, full of love, serene, and all about the people getting married and the love they share!

Red Wine Be GONE!

Dear Wendi,

My wedding is coming up in a few weeks! I can hardly wait! I do have a concern as the day draws closer. My fiance and I are red wine and scotch drinkers. We are serving a variety of both at the bar. I am starting to worry someone will spill red wine on my dress. Is there something you can recommend if this does happen?

Hi E.R.,

I'm so glad you asked this question! Spills and stains are a huge concern with most brides. But I promise, you have little to worry about! I have a couple of secret weapons to combat a red wine stain.

Avoid serving or drinking red wine prior to the reception. The less possible contact the less likely you'll be spilled on.

If you are spilled on, immediately poor white wine on the spot. It will neutralize the acid of the red and pull the red color out. You will still be wet in that spot, but the red will vanish.

Lastly, I am a huge fan of a product called Wine Away. (You can find it in most grocery stores. I've had luck finding it at Albertson's and QFC. ) It works in a heart beat on all fabrics and leaves no trace behind. I have used it on silk, satin, french lace, duchess satin, you name it. I use it at weddings and at home. I absolutely love it. They don't pay me to say this. I just love how well it works! (Though, they should!)

*Every dress (wedding or not) is different, and will be effected by these products differently. To be safe, I would first try any of my suggestions on a small area (maybe near the bottom or underside) before using all over your wedding dress. I have had extremely positive results, but can't guarantee them for all.

Thank you so much for your question! Your friends are right. Having an emergency kit on wedding day can be a real life saver. My kit is FULL of different goodies to get through any situation. However a bride's emergency kit can have far less. Here are some basics that I find my clients using the most:

Stain stick - Shout wipes. Wine away. Bleach pen. Any one of them will do the trick
Sewing kit - make sure it includes thread the color of your and your brides maid's dresses
Tissues - small hand held packs are the best
Hair spray - a small travel bottle will do the trick
Comb or Brush - or both
Scissors - even a small pair. Check and see if there is a pair in the sewing kit
Ribbon in your wedding colors - can use it anywhere
Fashion tape - Can help secure a dress or ribbon to flower girls dress
Band aids - someone always needs one
Straws - you don't want to ruin your lipstick
Breathe Mints - insurance for an amazing first kiss!
Blotting papers - (if you don't have these - toilet seat cover will work the same)
Plastic cups - just in case the hotel doesn't have enough for everyone to toast
Wine opener- a cheap one will do
Granola Bars - hunger can strike at any moment!

There are a million other things in my kit, but this should prepare you for almost anything on your wedding day!

You wedding day has finally arrived! The months if not a year spent researching and hiring the right vendors, weeks of perfecting the details, days of running errands, and hour agonizing over your seating chart are behind you. It is now time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

The people you love are all around snapping photos, pouring champagne, steaming dresses, listening to music, and celebrating what lies ahead in just a few hours! With all of the things going on and excitement in the air it is all to common for this mishap to take place.

Monday Mishap: No one planned anything to eat outside of the wedding meal

The wedding day is a long day especially for the bride, groom, and their bridal party. With hair and makeup starting 5 to 6 hours prior to the ceremony. It is common that a wedding day last 10 to 12 hours if not more. So count back, if your ceremony starts at 5:00pm then that means 11:00 am or so you start hair. Then getting dressed, photos, ceremony, etc. And what time is dinner scheduled? 7:00 or 8:00 pm? That is a really long time to go without food. You are packed full of emotions and adrenaline, but that will only last so long. Eating during that time is a very important part of a successful and fun day.

If you have overlooked this ever so important detail, don't stress you are not alone. It is often overlooked by almost everyone. My advice is to sit down with your groom and talk about what each of you is going to do for breakfast and lunch on wedding day. You are obviously going to do different things, but having a plan for each of you is very important.

Since I don't know what you getting ready plans are, and won't be there to bring lunch, here is a wide variety of simple suggestions:

For the Groom:

Meet up with grooms men for breakfast/lunch - (*make reservations if you have a large party)
Eat at the golf course after your 9 holes (*You don't have time for 18! You just don't!)
Arrive to the hotel early and eat in the lounge prior to getting dressed
Order room service
Eat breakfast and lunch at home prior to arriving at picture location (*this does mean you need to have food for both meals in your home ahead of time. Yes, a trip to the grocery store!)

For the bride:

Order room service in your bridal suite
Have your family or brides maids bring in muffins, fruit, yogurt, lunch meat,crackers, etc. for you all to snack on.
Have your bridal brunch/luncheon in the morning before hair and make up
Stock up your house with your favorite foods (nothing that can not be prepared before wedding day. No cooking or hassle on wedding day!)
Pack a snack bag ahead of time and bring it with you to the ceremony location
Pre-order appetizers from reception location to have ready for you as soon as you arrive
If ceremony and reception at same location - have the appetizer prepared for all bridal party to enjoy in down time prior to ceremony

*Special Note* Once your dress is on it is important to have stain free snacks to munch on. OUT:: chocolate, mustard, red wine, cranberry sauce, anything with a colored sauce IN: pretzels, fruit, veggies (watch dips), cheese platters, nuts, etc.

The day was gloomy with a chance of rain, but that didn't darken the spirit of Jenn & Thuy on their wedding day. I don't even think they noticed! Luckily for me, the rain held of just long enough for the touching roof top ceremony at Bell Harbor to be complete. Weddings on a Budget

I work with clients that have budget's of $20K to $500K and everywhere in between. One thing about them is the same, they want to get most for their money while keeping it elegant and beautiful. So, the other day when asked to be the wedding consultant by Q 13 Fox's Dana Rebik for a story she was doing on Bride's on a Budget I couldn't pass it up. The story ran on this morning's news program! If you missed it, here is the copy:

Local wedding planners say a majority of brides are slashing budgets due to the tight economy.

Seattle - Planning a wedding on a tight budget is stressing out many brides right now.

For some, the tough economy means no elaborate ceremonies or receptions, but there's a lot you can do to plan a frugal yet fabulous wedding.

Angela Alanis got married on May 30, 2009 in Seattle and says she was stressed for months about paying the bill.

"It was a shock when the venue and catering bill was going to be the entire budget! We really had to prioritize," says Alanis.

Seattle wedding planner Wendi Hroncich of Ethereal Events says she saw a slight decline in wedding planning budgets in 2008, but in 2009, it's a demand among most brides. In fact, a recent survey shows 40% of brides have cut their budgets this year because of the economy.

So where do you start when it comes to cutting costs? One easy way is decor, and skipping elaborate centerpieces. If you have a wedding of 200 guests at 20 tables of 10, having a large elaborate centerpiece at each table could cost you 200 dollars on the high end per centerpiece. That's a total of $4,000! If you choose to use colored linens at about $15 dollars a piece, and a smaller arrangement like floating flowers and candles, you could be paying about $600 dollars for your centerpieces. That is a savings of $3,400.

Some other ideas include bringing your own alcohol and caterer to your reception, assembling your own invitations and using an iPod for dinner and cocktail hour, and only hiring a DJ or band for dancing afterwards.

Here are a few additional budget saving tips Dana's story didn't mention:

Double use your flowers:

Using the flowers from ceremony to reception is not only green, it is also smart and budget friendly. If you're having aisle posies attached to chairs or pews, or on stands lining the aisle of your ceremony you can transfer them to table tops of your reception for an easy and elegant center piece. The brides maid's bouquets can be used as extra decor on the guest book table, cake table, head table, buffet, and anywhere else you like a little something extra. The bridal bouquet makes a wonderful centerpiece for the sweet heart table. If you double use the flowers from ceremony to reception there is so much more to work with and less money spent.

2. Use items other than flowers or perishables for decor. Feathers and colored glass stones are really popular right now. You rent them from your florist or designer, and since they reuse them over and over the cost is far less then flowers.

3. Having a cocktail style reception not only elevates your swank factor, it is also a huge savings from a formal sit down meal. You are paying for finger foods rather than a huge meal. Many cocktail receptions have ample amounts of food, just in smaller portions so guests never go home hungry and you aren't spending beyond your means.4. 5. Last, but not least: Hire a Wedding Coordinator. This is the most important piece of advice I'm giving to you today! We save you time, money, stress, mistakes (like losing your deposit on a bad vendor), headaches, etc. We will work with in your budget and find the best vendors available to you in your price range. We are not looking to make you spend more money. If we were so limited to only a small set of the highest end vendors WE WOULD NOT BE VERY GOOD AT OUR JOBS! We are here to find the perfect fit vendor for you, and you alone!

If it's not in your budget to have a coordinator plan the whole wedding, that is okay. Hire one to sit down with you to get you started. Many coordinators especially myself are available on an hourly or package consultant basis. Mine is called 'Jump Start to Planning!' It has been so helpful for so many clients!

Dear Wendi Wednesday...How to Beat the Heat!

For this week's Dear Wendi Wednesday, I am taking a break from the boys to address an important issue. As many of you have noticed from the week straight of 90+ degree temperatures we are in the dog days of summer. Personally, I could not be happier! I love the sunshine and heat. The thing I don't love is how it takes a toll on my couples, their family and bridal party on wedding day.

Wendi, do you have any tips for not only surviving, but thriving in the heat on wedding day?

Drink LOTS of water
Bring fans (hand held or battery operated) to cool yourself and others off
If you drink, don't drink alcohol in excess - add a glass of water in between every alcoholic beverage
Take breaks during pictures to go inside and cool off (if inside is not an option, look for shade to cool down in)
Plan some time to relax - whether it's 45 mins instead of 30 before your ceremony, or not joining cocktail hour take some down time.
Be flexible! This goes attire, seating of guests, location of pictures, etc.
Let the men take off their jackets. They're dying in all those layers of wool or polyester blends.
Keep a slight bend in your knees - Never locked them out. (This will help prevent people from passing out during the ceremony and pictures)
Keep water near by for your flowers. They will look fresh all day long if you keep them in water when you can.
Have your cake delivered later in the day, as close to reception time as possible. Never put it in the direct sun. (Cakes tipping over or leaning is not that uncommon on HOT days)
If your cake does have a severe lean, cut it early. You don't have to serve it right away, but better to cut the cake out of order then not have one to cut.
Live it up! Sunshine is far better than rain!

Mishap Monday - Who has the Hummer?

This week's mishap was a first for me! It unfortunately happened just last weekend to my fabulous couple.

Wedding Day was going perfectly for E & R! The ladies hair and make up ended early, breakfast and lunch had been delivered on time, and all the bridal party was there and having a great time. The warm and sunny weather glistening off the lake created the perfect backdrop for pictures!

The day was going flawlessly or so we thought...When it was time to for the Bride and Groom to leave the hotel for the church their car was no where to be found! It turns out the Best Man loaned their transportation to a "friend" of the Groom, and he was no where to be found, nor was he answering his cell phone! He and the Hummer were M.I.A.!

As any great coordinator would do, I calmly packed up the Bride, Groom and Best man into my car and raced them to the church. I must say it was a quite ride! There was little if any conversation to be had besides me making jokes and light hearted comments about how wonderfully the day was going! In the grand scheme of things, this was a very little hick up! I wanted everyone in my car to know this.

After the ceremony was over the Bride and Groom's Hummer was in place to take them to the reception and all was forgotten. The lesson to be learned from this mishap:

DON'T LOAN OUT THE BRIDE & GROOM'S TRANSPORTATION!!!

Can My Dog Be in the Wedding?

Kaycee English considers her dog Bowser part of the family, so including him in her wedding was an obvious choice.

Hadn't she spent the year before her special day scouring Petfinder.com, wishing she could adopt a dog? Hadn't her husband, John, taken the lead on talking their landlord into allowing a pet?

"I really wanted everyone that I loved there that day," said English, who lives in Freehold, N.J., and dressed Bowser in a tuxedo T-shirt for ringbearer duty.

The idea of dogs walking down the aisle or sitting for wedding photos may be strange - even repulsive - to some, but a little planning can make things run smoothly and bring families closer together.

Stephanie Baker of Bowling Green, Ky., said she and her husband, Steven, adopted their blind dog Tucker when his story on Petfinder "tugged at our heartstrings." They rarely leave home without him and felt strongly about including him in their wedding.

She made one wedding photo a tribute to her mother, who has cancer. Baker posed in the same position with Tucker as Mom did with her own dog at her wedding 35 years ago.

"If it's something that's important to you, do it," Baker said. "If you have strong feelings about wanting to include someone, you'll regret not doing it."

Finding a venue that allows dogs may not be as big a deal as you might expect. Jessica Sempek of Skokie, Ill., said she was the first to ask her chosen location if dogs were allowed and the reaction was, "Why not?" Sempek and her husband, Scott Stewart, had a young nephew walk their dogs Lady Bug and Emmie down the aisle.

"He took his job so seriously," Sempek said.

Once you have your location, be prepared to answer questions about the details, like how long you expect the animals to be there, and many sites will accommodate, said Wendi Hroncich, a wedding planner in Seattle.

"Most venues generally want the bride and groom to have anything they want," she said.

The experienced brides are loaded with pet planning tips:

- Designate someone to be responsible for a dog during the ceremony and to transport the pet there and back. The human should be someone who's not involved in the proceedings. If it's a child's role to walk the animal down the aisle, an adult should supervise before and after.

- Don't forget to schedule a dog's trip to the groomer. "They went to the spa just like I did," Sempek said.

- If you're boarding your dog after the ceremony, check timing. Julie Hall of Silver Spring, Md., said finding a kennel for her pooch Maddy with late enough drop-off hours was difficult.

- Bring treats to help persuade the dog to participate in the photo shoot and make sure it can sit and stay on command. Before her wedding, Hall took her pet to obedience classes.

Most couples don't bring their pets to the reception - it's too long and overwhelming - but being part of the ceremony really isn't a challenge for most dogs, Hroncich said. "All they have to do is go down the aisle and then sit."

Sempek found that the only unexpected behavior at her wedding was little 9-pound Emmie's reaction to the music. "She wanted to pick a fight with the cellist," she said. "That was the only time they barked all day."

In the end, all the couples thought the effort was more than worth it - and reluctant relatives came around.

"After the fact," English said, "people look at the photos and say, 'How cute is this one,' and it's always the one with the dog."

Mishap Monday - Word to the Wise

There is so much information that goes into an invitation that the wording needs to be carefully thought out. This applies to all invitations, wedding, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, birthday, engagement party, etc. You need the date, time, location(s) and any other sentiments you see fit. For a wedding if the ceremony and reception are in different location it is thoughtful to incorporate a map or directions. An RSVP card is a very important enclosure to include as well.
With all of this information it's important that you think about not only what you mean, but also how the wording can be interpreted by your guests.

This is weeks mishap I encountered very recently:

A fantastic couple of mine recently sent out there wedding invitations. They were very thoughtful about what to include. They thought a lot about their guests and guest count. They had some signs that some guests may not know NOT to bring additional people with them. Wanting to prevent this confusion we included a line on the RSVP card that read ____ # Guests. So, if the number of guests on the RSVP card was higher than the number invited we could touch base with that person. This seemed like the correct wording to us, until they received an RSVP with the name of 1 person attending and then 2 guests in the blank space. This particular invite was sent inviting 2 adults and a child. (Does that mean that all 3 are coming or 2 total guests are coming?) It raised our eyebrows for sure wondering if we were facing another confusing situation.

To make a long story short, at great way of wording an RSVP card for the total number of guest coming is: ____Total # Attending! This eliminates all confusion. Luckily for us, the large majority of the guest understood what we meant, and there was very little confusion. For me, I want a plan ahead of time that guarantees no extra work or confusion for my couples. I wish I would have know this sooner for this couple. Valuable information!

Please learn from our mishap, and use it to your advantage!

Dear Wendi Wednesday for the rest of month of June is being dedicated to all my male readers. I know how often you are forgotten during the wedding planning process. My next 3 Wednesday’s are dedicated solely to you! It is a small attempt to make up for the imbalance.

Dear Wendi,

My fiance and I are having an evening ceremony and reception. What is there for my grooms man and I to do on wedding day prior to the wedding?

Dear Bewildered Groom,

Thank you for the question. I actually get asked this quite a bit by both concerned brides and clueless grooms. Before making too many plans it is important to know what your wedding day schedule is going to be. Your wedding pictures usually start two to three hours prior to the ceremony start time. (So, if you are having a 6:00pm ceremony you would need to be dressed, ready, and on location at 2:30 or so.) With this in mind, I have a lot of ideas I recommend to my clients.

My first suggestion may sound a little odd to the men who do not consider themselves “metro sexual”, but it’s important. Male Grooming!

Take you and your grooms men to Flint Men's Grooming located in Bellevue for a few beers and a little pampering. They offer a number of services from massages to straight blade shaves and have a large selection of beers to choose from. They can provide a space you can all hang together. There is no risk of the dreaded cohabitation like all other salon/spas. It is men only!

A man and those closest to him should look and feel their best on wedding day. Yes, most of the attention will be on your beautiful bride, but all of her attention will be on you!
(Important to note: You should get your hair cut at least one week in advance, NOT the day of your wedding!)

My next suggestion after you're looking your best is go out and do something fun near by. You are lucky enough to be able to shower and dress in a relatively small amount of time. So, take advantage of it! Go boating, golfing, out to eat, etc.

Hotel 1000 has an amazing virtual golf club. Over the last few years my clients have really enjoyed it! You can have a private party or just hit a few rounds. There are two tee boxes that allow 4 golfers each, so reservations are a must. If you plan ahead the hotel can provide food and drinks for you to enjoy. It's a great way to spend time with your buddy's before your wedding festivities begin.

Lastly, I suggest if you are getting ready in a hotel, see what the hotel offers for entertainment. They may have a great restaurant, movie theater or know of something close by you can take advantage of. Wedding morning can be a high energy time, so if you have something fun planned it can help take your mind off all the excitement for a little while.

Most importantly, go enjoy time with those closest to you. Plan ahead so you are ready ON TIME!! Your wedding is the most important event on this day. Have fun, but always keep that in mind!

St. James Catherdral and Hotel 1000 were the perfect locations to show off Seattle to this East Coast couple's friends and family. Mishap Monday - RSVP nightmare!

It's a huge mishap for Brides and Grooms to not pay for postage on their guests RSVPs. It is a simple gesture that lets your guests know that you will be taking care of them come wedding day! It's thoughtful and considerate.

For you 2009 summer brides, when you do send out your invitation make sure you stamp every envelope or postcard you send with the appropriate postage for when your guests will be returning it. The price of postage is going up Today, May 11th from $0.42 to $0.44.

You can combat this price increase by buying forever stamps at the $0.42 price. These "forever" stamps will work no matter how high the cost of postage gets. I recommend buying far more than you need so you can use them on your RSVP envelopes or postcards and thank you notes too! With the Forever stamp you won't have to worry about not receiving an RSVP due to inadequate postage. Saving money and stress anywhere you can adds up to a lot of savings!

Mishap Monday - Did you receive it?

The postage on a wedding invitation varies quite a bit depending on the invite. There can be a huge difference in paper weight, number of inserts and envelopes, invitation shape, ribbon detailing, crystal gem stones, etc. All of it makes a difference in the cost of sending it to your guests. The one thing that does not differ from invitation to invitation is it is a huge mishap to have the wrong postage!

Make sure you take all of your invitations to the post office to be weighted for correct postage value before you put them in the mail. This will relieve a huge amount of stress about whether or not your guest received their invitation!

In honor of my birthday and of course Earth day, I have saved this question:

Dear Wendi,

How can I make my wedding earth friendly and green?

Thank you so much for this questions! I wouldn't say that I'm an expert on green weddings, but being that Mother Earth and I share a birthday today, April 22nd, I have a pretty great connection to the topic.

Green weddings are so easy to do! I love working with environmentally conscious companies and clients. Many options don't cost any more then non-green products. You can be environmentally friendly with almost every aspect of your wedding. You don't necessarily need to go over board, but a few of these ideas can make a big impact on your wedding day, and benefit the wonderful earth we all share! Here are a few of the ways.

Invitations:
Using invitations made of recycled paper, out of cotton or bamboo with soy ink is a really earth friendly thing to do. The bamboo and cotton are grown quickly and easily specifically for the purpose of harvesting into paper, saving our trees and rain forests. The non-toxic soy ink is a great substitute for the harsh alternatives.

Also, ditching the inner envelope and RSVP envelope saves a lot of un-needed paper. Opt for a postcard reply card or an online option. Brown Sugar Designs has a great collection of green options!

Flowers:

Flowers grown locally and in season are great way to help the environment. There is little transportation involved causing less carbon emissions.

Also, double using flowers from the ceremony for reception causes you to use less. The bridal bouquet makes a wonderful centerpiece on a sweet heart table, and the brides maid's bouquets can be used as arrangements on the bar, guest book table, around the cake, and many other places. This will reduce your flower order significantly. Using the flowers from wedding day at a brunch the next day, or letting your guests take them home to enjoy extends the life of the flowers.

Lastly, wrapping the bouquets with handkerchiefs or organic ribbon is a beautiful alternative to wasteful one time satin ribbon.
Food:

Using an organic green caterer is a great and green idea for your wedding. Organic caterers buy directly from local farmers. This garuntees freshness and quality, which is so important for your wedding day meal. It also cuts down on green house gas emissions and supports the local economy! Green caterers don't stop there! Most compost all left over food, and packaging associated with the making of the meal. There is little to no waste left over! Two fantastic organic and green caterers in Seattle are Herban Feast and Ravishing Radish!

Transportation:

Having your ceremony and reception at the same location cuts down on the amount guests travel. If you have to travel between two locations think about green options for shuttling your guests. The less cars on the road the better!

Favors:

A donation to your favorite charity is a great option for a green wedding favor. There are also many companies that offer tree saplings or flower seeds that are customizable for favors. Edibles are also a fantastic favor. They are an unexpected treat for your guests!

Mishaps Monday - Oops! Wedding Dress Week 4

This is the 4th and final week of mishaps devoted to the Wedding Dress! So, let's recap what we have learned:

1. Don't buy a dress a size too small.
2. Make sure there is continuity between your wedding dress and the rest of the wedding, especially with formality and style.
3. Wear all appropriate undergarments to your fittings.

Week 4's mishap is all about wedding day.

On your wedding day you are generally in your dress for 6 to 10 hours worth of time. There are pictures, the ceremony, and all of the reception for you to enjoy the most exquisite gown(s) you've ever owned. You are the center of every one's attention through out dinner, dancing, toasting, and more. All this time and celebration in a traditional white or off white gown also allows for plenty of opportunity for spills and accidents.

On my wedding day, the first thing I did after arriving at the ceremony site for pictures is run my dress into a greasy path marker. There was a huge black smudge on the lower right portion of my skirt. Before freaking out, my maid of honor, mother, and bride's maids went to the restroom with my emergency kit to work a little magic. Shout wipes, oxyclean spray, and a little elbow grease were my best friend that day! The stain didn't fully come out until going to the dry cleaner after the wedding, but the products in my emergency kit made a huge difference for my dress and mental state!

To avoid the mishap of a devastating stain, make sure you pack your emergency kit with these 3 things!

1. Wine away - this miracle products neutralizes red wine and lifts it out of fabrics almost immediately. If you for some reason can't find wine away,which I buy in the wine section at the grocery store. A trick of the trade is pouring white wine on red will also neutralize the red.
2. Oxyclean spray - I don't know how it works, but it does! This is some powerful stuff. From food stains to pen ink, it helps with everything. I carry around a small sample size bottle in my kit.
3. Shout wipes - These are great for everything as well! I use them often to get dirt off the bottom of my bride's dresses, especially the long trains. They can get pretty dirty during pictures.

A dirty dress can lead to a break down. With these 3 products in your emergency kit, you are sure to avoid this mishap all together!
